(OUTRAGEOUS) READ: 3 of 4 Oklahoma Students Can’t Name First President…

294358-6-20090917133058.image(Newser Summary) – Are you smarter about American history than a recent immigrant? Most of the students in Oklahoma’s public high schools aren’t. A conservative think tank asked thousands of high school kids to answer 10 questions drawn from the citizenship test given to recent immigrants. Would-be citizens have to answer six correctly, and 92% do so on their first try. By contrast, only 3% of the Oklahoma students would have.

A whopping 77%  couldn’t name the first president, and 90% didn’t know how many justices are on the Supreme Court. (The question most knew—61%—involved naming the ocean on the East Coast.) The problem is not just an issue for Oklahoma; a study in Arizona yielded similar results. “It points to a real serious problem,” says one think tank member. “Jefferson said that a nation can’t expect to be ignorant and free.”

(CRIME) READ: Australian Man Charged With Raping Daughter For 30 Years…

leave a comment »

s-HANDCUFFS-largeAn Australian man accused of raping his daughter almost daily for 30 years and fathering her four children has been charged by police.

The man, who has been called “Australia’s Fritzl” after the notorious Austrian incest case, allegedly began raping his daughter in the 1970s when she was 11 years old, and had threatened her with violence if she ever revealed the abuse.

According to a report in Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper, the man was arrested in February after the victim approached police and said that she had been kept a virtual prisoner in the family home in a country town in the southern state of Victoria.

The newspaper said that all of the woman’s four children were born with birth defects in Melbourne hospitals. One of them died.

According to the report, the woman had reported the abuse to police in 2005 but then refused to co-operate further because she feared for her safety.

However, she went to police again in June last year and gave a statement against her father. Police conducted DNA tests on the father and laid 83 charges of sex abuse against him in February.

The case has been likened to that of Josef Fritzl, who was jailed for life in May for imprisoning and raping his daughter for 24 years and murdering one of the seven children he had with her.

The Victorian Premier, John Brumby, to demand an immediate investigation into how the case had gone unnoticed for so long.

The Herald Sun interviewed the woman’s mother, who is still married to the alleged rapist, and who lived with them in the house in rural Victoria. She claims that she was not aware of any abuse, despite sharing the house with her husband, daughter and grandchildren until 2005. READ MORE

Humanities curricula will be revised to bring them more in line with Islamic principles, an official says. Critics say the move is based on ‘fascism and totalitarianism.’

September 7, 2009

Reporting from Beirut – A hard-line deputy of Iran’s supreme leader announced steps Sunday to purge Iranian universities of Western influences even as the government faced accusations of “fascism and totalitarianism” leveled by the country’s former president.

Hamid Reza Ayatollahi, head of a government body that oversees universities, announced a plan to revise humanities curricula to bring them more in line with Islamic principles.

“Many of the syllabuses taught to students majoring in humanities are not in line with Iranian and Islamic culture and therefore their revision is a must,” Ayatollahi said in a statement published by Iranian news agencies.

A committee has been established to “eliminate certain curricula and replace them with Islamic materials,” he said.

The effort stemmed from a speech last week by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who said that humanities courses result in “disbelief in Islamic and divine teachings” and are mostly based on “materialist philosophical concepts causing misgivings about religious principles.”

(STRANGE) China Scientists Report UFO…

leave a comment »

(Newser Summary) – Chinese scientists have reported filming a UFO for 40 minutes during the solar eclipse in July, reports the Telegraph. Researchers from the Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing said they will study the footage for a full year before they issue any conclusions. Scientists “discovered near the sun an unidentified object,” said the director of the observatory. “Its physical nature remains to be further studied.”

Researchers will “deal with this data, complete the data analysis, and reveal the scientific findings,” said the director. The report follows a series of UFO sightings in China, including one filmed the day of the solar eclipse by students in Deqing in Guandong Province, which shows a glowing object that changes shape.

(WORLD) Missing channel pirate ship carried Russian arms for Iran…

www.timesonline.co.uk_The Arctic Sea mysteriously disappeared off the coast of France on 1 August 2009_Arctic_Sea_602263a

A CARGO ship that vanished in the Channel was carrying arms to Iran and was being tracked by Mossad, the Israeli security service, according to sources in both Russia and Israel.

The Arctic Sea, officially carrying a cargo of timber worth £1.3m, disappeared en route from Finland to Algeria on July 24. It was recovered off west Africa on August 17 when eight alleged hijackers were arrested. The Kremlin has consistently denied that the vessel was carrying a secret cargo. It claims the ship was hijacked by criminals who demanded a £1m ransom.

The official version was challenged by sources in Tel Aviv and Moscow who claimed the ship had been loaded with S-300 missiles, Russia’s most advanced anti-aircraft weapon, while undergoing repairs in the Russian port of Kaliningrad.

Mossad, which closely monitors arms supplies to Iran, is said to have tipped off the Russian government that the shipment had been sold by former military officers linked to the underworld. READ MORE

Gadhafi Libya Leader(Newser Summary) – Moammar Gadhafi plans to urge the United Nations to wipe Switzerland off the map when he visits New York later this month, the New York Daily News reports. The Libyan leader—as part of a vendetta against the Alpine nation that began when his son Hannibal was busted for beating up his servants in a Geneva hotel—will ask the UN to abolish the country and divide its land up between Italy, France, and Germany, Swiss lawmakers say.
