293014-1-20090914013852(Newser Summary) – Russia has agreed to lend Venezuela more than $2 billion to buy Russian-made weaponry to ward off what the South American country sees as an imminent US-Colombian attack, reports the BBC. “With these rockets, it is going to be very difficult for them to come and bomb us,” said socialist President Hugo Chavez. Chavez plans to buy nearly 100 tanks and anti-aircraft systems as tensions mount in the wake of a Colombia agreement to grant the US more access to military bases there.

www.newser.com_Swine flu fears have prompted a church to ban peace..._291281-6-20090908131055(Newser Summary) – Churches nationwide are bracing for cases of swine flu, with one in Cincinnati banning peace handshakes during Mass, the Enquirer reports. The Catholic church passed out a flier telling parishioners not to shake with their neighbors during the “sign of peace” or clasp hands during the “Our Father” prayer. At least three other Cincinnati churches are considering similar measures, as are schools and churches across the US, notes the AP.

(TABLOID) Rag Magazines Are Saying Patrick Swayze Dieing…

www.newser.com__291552-1-20090909091818(Newser Summary) – Patrick Swayze has left the hospital and gone home to die in his own bed, the National Enquirer reports. Despite the actor’s strong will to live, he has reportedly suffered multiple setbacks in his battle with pancreatic cancer, including a mild heart attack and an ongoing intestinal infection, and now often requires a wheelchair and oxygen. “Patrick’s bodily functions appear to be shutting down,” a Swayze family source said.

The source claimed that Swayze recently told wife Lisa Niemi, “I refuse to die in a hospital room. I’ll go on my own terms—in our home and in my own bed.” Swayze cannot visit his beloved New Mexico ranch because he has to stay close to medical care, and though he is in “constant pain” at his Los Angeles home, “he refuses to give in.”

Note from DNN’s Editor: If you have not already noticed, DNN is boycotting this ridiculous health care (Riots) debate that’s been taking place as of late, for two reasons: #1 it has completely dominated the mainstream news, so you’ll get better coverage of it there. #2 DNN tries to “Drill down” and find news that has been covered up by the mainstream media, but this article seemed special to me, and I thought I’d share it with you.

Republicans argue that some of the voters’ concerns are justified because, they say, the proposals before Congress do not spell out procedures to verify the citizenship of those who would receive health coverage.

After testing their ideas with voters during the recess, Republicans said they would press for verification measures when the health care debate picks up again in Washington.

“The language is there, but without the verification you can’t frankly believe it is serious,” said Representative Lamar Smith, Republican of Texas, who added that concerns about illegal immigrants were clearly on the minds of citizens he met in his district. Mr. Smith said Democrats “intentionally left gaping loopholes” in the proposals that illegal immigrants could step through.

Broad explanations, not intricate detail, were what voters in Georgia were looking for in recent meetings with Representative Phil Gingrey, a Republican who was a practicing physician in the state for 26 years. Mr. Gingrey said there had been an influx of illegal immigrants in his district in the last decade.

“A lot of their kids are in the school system,” Mr. Gingrey said in a telephone interview. “They get a free public education without any question. My constituents don’t want the same thing to happen with regard to health care.”

(TECH) Microsoft sues Google…

www.blogcdn.com__battle-google-microsoft-200x267drSource: Times Online

The rivalry between the world’s leading technology companies intensified today when Microsoft announced that it is suing Google for poaching one of its leading executives.

Microsoft is furious about the defection of Dr Kai-Fu Lee, one of its technology experts and founder of its Asian research division, who has left to head Google’s first research and development centre in China.

Microsoft claims the move violates confidentiality and non-competition agreements Dr Lee signed when he joined the company in 1998. The software company is seeking a court ruling that would require Dr Lee to honour his contract, which it says includes a clause forbidding him to work for a rival within a year of leaving.

“As a senior executive, Dr Lee has direct knowledge of Microsoft’s trade secrets concerning search technologies and China business strategies,” Microsoft said. READ MORE

(READ) Missing boy, 6, found behind wall after two years…

leave a comment »

www.telegraph.co.uk_Missing boy, 6, found behind wall after two years_ricky_1476027cA six-year-old boy allegedly abducted in a custody dispute nearly two years ago has been found hiding with his mother behind a false wall at his grandmother’s home

Police believe that Ricky Chekevdia spent 22 months inside the two-storey house in rural southern Illinois.

“We let him out of the (patrol) car and he ran around like he’d never seen outdoors. It was actually very sad,” Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Stan Diggs said. “He was very happy to be outside. He said he never goes outside.”

Investigators were issued with a court order to search the house. They found Ricky with his mother Shannon Wilfong in a hideaway roughly 5 feet by 12 feet and about the height of a washing machine.

Miss Wilfong, 30, has been charged with felony child abduction and Ricky’s grandmother, Diane Dobbs, 51, is charged with aiding and abetting.

The boy is now staying with one of his father’s relatives while state child-welfare workers investigated claims that his father Mike Chekevdia abused the child before his disappearance.

The 48-year-old lieutenant colonel in the Illinois National Guard rejected the allegations and said he was thrilled his son had been found.

“Two years? You have no idea,” he told The Associated Press from his house in Royalton, Ill., some three miles from the home where his son turned up. “I’ve lost sleep. I’ve lost weight. I’ve gained weight. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.” READ MORE
